Anti-Racist Pledge

Summary of how Alexandra Primary School is addressing commitments made in the Anti-Racist Pledge:

1. Eliminating Racism and Discrimination

  • Policy and Practice: The school challenges any form of intolerance based on race, culture or ethnicity through its Positive Relationships and Behaviour Policy, Anti-Bullying Policy and Staff Code of Conduct.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Staff are trained to identify and respond to incidents of prejudice, ensuring a zero-tolerance approach.
  • Rights-Based Approach: The school’s commitment to UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) reinforces non-discrimination principles.
  • Working in partnership with outside agencies, such as Chelsea Foundation and Schools Liaison Officers to educate pupils about racism and discriminatory language.

2. Advancing Racial Equality and Equity

  • Tracking Achievement Gaps: Data-driven approaches ensure that pupils from all backgrounds, including ethnic minorities, are progressing at least in line with their peers.
  • Support for EAL (English as an Additional Language) Families: The school engages parents from diverse linguistic backgrounds through:
    • Translated school communications.
    • Staff members who speak multiple languages to assist in meetings.
  • Intersectionalities with Multilingualism, Pupil Premium Grant and Special Educational Needs are identified and considered in order to provide an individualised approach.

3. Fostering Good Relations Across Racial and Ethnic Groups

  • Inclusive Curriculum:
    • Half-termly themes encourage pupils to learn about and celebrate different backgrounds, cultures, and identities.
    • Decolonising the Curriculum Training for staff ensures materials accurately represent diversity and challenge stereotypes. Staff attend Local Authority training to ensure the curriculum reflects a balanced and accurate historical perspective.
    • Children see themselves represented in the curriculum, which fosters a sense of belonging.
  • Cultural Representation in School Life:
    • Community members are invited to share experiences, traditions and languages.
    • Annual ‘Proud to be Day’
    • Assemblies celebrate diversity, inclusion and British values.
  • Pupil Voice and Feedback:
    • Regular engagement with pupils to assess the school’s approach to diversity and anti-racism.
    • Sustaining the Gold Rights Respecting Award, ensuring that racial equality remains embedded in school ethos.
