Governance
The Governing Body
Structure and Remit
The Governing Body has three core functions:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of Alexandra Primary School and its pupils and the performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing Alexandra Primary School’s financial performance and making sure its money is well spent.
The Governing Body makes the strategic and policy decisions affecting the school, whilst the operational and managerial decisions are delegated to the head teacher, Mr. Waiting.
The constitution of the Governing Body is set out in our Instrument of Government. We have eleven Governors (each appointed by the Governing Body, with the exception of Parent Governors who are elected by the parent body and the Staff Governor who is elected by the staff body) comprising:
- two elected Parent Governors,
- one Local Authority Governor (nominated by the Local Authority and appointed by the Governing Body),
- one elected Staff Governor,
- the head teacher, and
- six Co-opted Governors (co-opted for their skills and experience).
With the exception of Mr. Waiting, who is a governor by virtue of his position as head teacher, the term of office for all Governors is four years. At the end of that term they may be re-appointed. We also currently have one Associate Member, who has been appointed for a four year term.
Governors and the Associate member meet as a Full Governing body at least once each term (and usually four times a year). Each committee meets at least three times a year.
Chair of Governors
The Governing Body elects a Chair annually. The current Chair is Lorraine Slattery.
Committees
Governor business is carried out through the Full Governing Body and its three committees. One committee focuses on Teaching, Learning and Curriculum, one on Finance, Resources and Premises, and one on People, Pay and Performance. On occasion specific working groups may be set up and there is one Special Panel (Headteacher's appraisal panel).
Link Governors
Link Governors are appointed annually and oversee a specific aspect of the work of the school. This means that they will take steps to become informed about the relevant area and will:
- link with a (named) member of school staff with responsibilities in the relevant area;
- report to Full Governing Body meetings; and
- review and recommend relevant policies.
Minutes of Governing Body Meetings
The minutes of meetings are available for inspection in the School Office.
Contacting the Governing Body
You can contact the Governing Body, the Chair of Governors or an individual Governor via the Governance Professional, Michelle Sutton. You can leave a letter for the GP at the School Office or send an email.

The governors of Alexandra Primary School believe it is important that boards reflect the diversity of the school communities they serve. Diverse boards promote inclusive school environments and provide diverse role models for staff and young people.
