Year: 2

Week beginning: 

Monday 12th December


  • This week we will be writing another poem about winter. We will be using our senses to help us generate descriptive language to describe winter. After that, we will be learning to read aloud our poem using the appropriate intonation to make it interesting for an audience.


  • We will be continuing our topic on shape. This week we will be counting edges on 3D shapes, counting vertices on 3D shapes, sorting 3D shapes and making patterns.


  • We will continue our second Jigsaw Jack topic: celebrating differences. We will be looking at ways to show kindness to ourselves and others during the holidays. 


  • We are looking at how different materials can be used for everyday purposes. We will discuss this using our key word: suitable. 


  • We will carry on with our topic: The Great Fire of London. This week we will completing a knowledge organiser quiz!


Please practise our spellings for this week. Your child will have a handwriting and maths sheet to complete. This homework will go home on a Thursday and will need to be returned by the following Tuesday. 

Knowledge Organisers

•Every half term we will send home knowledge organisers for foundation subjects. These are to help with your child’s retrieval of knowledge e.g specific dates and key words. By learning the key facts at home and in school, the knowledge will become part of your child’s long term memory.

•The knowledge organisers contain core knowledge which is essential for progress in each subject area.

•Students are required to learn the key parts of the knowledge organiser and they will have a fun quiz at the end of the half term to see how much knowledge they have retained!

•Please use the knowledge organisers to have discussions with your child about their topics and also to help them remember the information. One helpful method could be ‘look, cover, write, check’. You will show your child one small part of the knowledge organiser, discuss it, memorise it, cover it, they will practise recording it and then you can check the answer together!


  • Phonics: We will review phase 5. Please encourage your children to write these words using lead-in strokes. We will be focusing on the common exception words for year 2. 


  • Please can children wear their PE kits on PE days (Wednesday and Friday)
  • We will be making toy fire engines in our DT project this half term. To help us resource this project, we would greatly appreciate any used cardboard milk cartons (empty and rinsed), shoe boxes or cereal boxes that are going spare! We would also appreciate carton lids/caps. 
  • Reading: Children will begin to bring home their reading books. If your child has completed the decodable reading scheme they should have one reading book and a reading for pleasure book. If your child is still on the decodable reading scheme, they will take home one decodable reading book (which has been read 3 x within a reading group) and a reading for pleasure book.
