Together we nurture the genius in everyone
Welcome to Alexandra Nursery (Ducklings)
We are very proud of our Nursery provision at Alexandra. The experienced team of teachers and qualified Nursery practitioners work hard to forge strong and positive relationships with children and their parents and carers. The children are provided with an engaging play based experience in Ducklings class, based around their own interests.
The Learning Environment: We work hard to provide an exciting and enabling environment where the children can explore and extend their learning through play, and where the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum can be met. We ensure all areas of the curriculum are covered in the setting to enhance the children’s experience of Maths, Literacy, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
We have an exciting indoor environment where the children can access and self-select the resources they are interested in, for as long as they wish. Every child has daily opportunities to draw, paint, glue, print, construct and write. They can count, sort, measure, compare, weigh and order items. They can play in the home corner in any capacity they choose; it could be a home, a restaurant, or even a vets! The children can pour sand, squeeze play dough, make train tracks, construct puzzles, dance, sing, or just quietly enjoy a book.
Our outside provision continues to provide the children with stimulating experiences that will engage the children. We have a building site for measuring, stacking bricks and using wheelbarrows to transport. The large sandpit offers a huge variety of creative experiences. The mud kitchen allows the children to experiment with mixing and pouring and pretend baking. The water tray might contain animals, tubes and funnels, or the water might be dyed red! Large scale construction of crates, pipes and palettes means the children create vehicles of every shape and size.
We focus on the main areas of learning in the Autumn term while the children settle in. These areas are
Communication and Language, Personal Social and Emotional Development and Physical Development.
We encourage open and trusting relationships with the Nursery adults and their classmates. The use of regular routines and structure allows all children to feel safe and cared for in our setting. This includes snack time where the children enjoy milk or water and a snack (usually fruit). This gives the children a chance to chat in small groups and start to forge those friendships that make Nursery life so enjoyable.
Teaching and learning:
We aim to extend each child’s knowledge based on their own interests and use each ‘teachable moment’ as effectively as possible. Every pupil will be a ‘focus child’ three times in the academic year. During this time, all staff observe them closely and see where the child’s interests take them – we then extend their learning based on those interests. We share photos of the setting that the child has taken and welcome photos from home for the child’s learning journey. All the children receive daily phonics and maths teaching.
We are understandably proud of the care and teaching we provide for every child that attends our Nursery. Our aim is to equip each unique children with the skills, thirst for learning and resilience required for the next stage of their school life.
