Establishing lifelong learning: rooted in knowledge, enriched by experience
Purpose of the Sports Premium
(updated November 2018)
In March 2013 the government announced that it was to provide additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport is allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in the 2018 to 2019 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
Basis of allocation
Allocations for the academic year 2018 to 2019 are calculated using the number of pupils in years 1 to 6, as recorded in the January 2018 census. Schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil.
